Easter is probably my most favorite holiday. Over the last 10 years or so, we have become known for our annual Easter party and try and pull out all the stops with decorations, baskets filled with toys and candy, an egg hunt, games and good food and drinks of course. When I was growing up I had an Uncle that was crazy about Easter. I remember how happy he was on Easter Sunday. I would even describe him as giddy in his celebration of Easter. For years I remember going to my cousins’ house and having a huge egg hunt. The house and yard were pretty big and there were tons of kids which made it really fun. When we were really young I remember they had real bunnies and chicks in a greenhouse that was attached to the back of the house. How fun is that? As we got a little older, I remember finding eggs that had $1 bills in them! But the highlight of it all was the annual egg toss. That’s right, raw eggs and a big yard.
Let me stop here and say that one of the best things about Easter for a girl is the dress. Am I right ladies? It was always colorful and flowery and had an abundance of bows. I loved my dress every year. Couldn’t wait to put it on and I’m sure my Mother had a hard time getting me out of it at the end of the day. So combine that with raw eggs being fired across the yard at me and well…you see the problem. I was always paired with one of my cousins, who were all boys, and in the heat of competition they had a hard time understanding my worry about getting egg on my beautiful Easter dress. I don’t recall ever winning and my cousins always seemed totally bummed if they were paired with me, since I almost always jumped out of the way of the speeding egg to save my dress! It would inevitably break on the ground eliminating me and whichever cousin was unlucky enough to be my partner.
Now that I’m in charge of Easter at our house, do we have an egg toss? You betcha we do! I did, at some point get over the dress and saw the sheer fun of it and it is the highlight of our party just as it was at my cousin’s house all those years ago. As we prepare for our next Easter celebration, we hope for another great party and a good messy egg toss.
