Low-Fat Summer Turkey Dip

We have had this recipe in our arsenal for a number of years. It is always a hit at any barbecue we go to and no one would guess how low in fat it is! Don’t be afraid of the fat free sour cream. For most recipes that call for sour cream, we normally prefer the reduced fat versions. But because it is mixed in with all the additional ingredients it works well in this recipe. Enjoy this dip at your next summer BBQ and watch it disappear!

Ingredients

1 lb ground Turkey Breast
¼ cup Water
1 oz Taco seasoning (1/2 packet)
8 oz fat free Sour Cream
1 jar Salsa (16oz)
3 1/2 oz low-fat shredded Mexican Cheese (like Weight Watchers Mexican Blend)
3 Green Onions, chopped (optional)

How to Make it!

Spray a large skillet with cooking spray and cook the ground turkey breast until cooked through.

Kevin’s Tip #1: When buying ground turkey, make sure you buy the ground turkey breast and not just ground turkey. Regular ground turkey contains white and dark meat and has more fat in it. Ground turkey breast is 99% fat free and is the better choice.

Kevin’s Tip #2: Because the ground turkey breast has no fat it may stick to the bottom of the pan. Trickle in the water, as you need it to help cook the turkey without adding any fat.

When the turkey is cooked through add ¼ cup of the salsa and the taco seasoning stirring until combined. Remove turkey from the heat. In a 3-quart casserole dish, layer the bottom with the ground turkey mixture. Next, spoon and smooth the sour cream over the top of the turkey creating another layer. Pour the remaining salsa over the top of the sour cream. Sprinkle the cheese over the salsa creating the last layer. Dice and add the green onion if desired. Chill in the refrigerator until you are ready to go to your event! Serve with tortilla chips.
